This is how my Father introduced me to
paintball on a weekend back in 1990.
A weekend that we helped start a tradition
which would continue for the next five years.
A tradition we called our
'Midnight Run'.
Every year, my Father, a dozen of our
friends, and myself made it a point to raid
the West teams base camp shortly after
the midnight hour.
Our first year, with no moonlight breaking
through the clouds, it was by pure chance
we stumbled upon their base camp with a
lone opponent guarding their flag.
This did not matter to me, as it was my first
time paintballing, let alone at night, let alone being the one to capture and return with our
opponents flag. I think I slept all of 1/2 hour
that first weekend of paintballing. :o)
By the 5th year, the Western team was
determined to stop us, and had set up a
campfire, spotlights, and well over 2 dozen
defenders as we made our approach.
Unfortuanately for them, their fire actually helped us, by providing us with silhouettes
and hindering their own night vision,
making them virtually blind unless they
were looking where a spotlight was shining.
After much stealth, and at our prearranged
time, 1/2 our Midnight Force opened up,
eliminating 3 or 4 opponents before they
could comprehend what was happening.
As all attention, spotlights, and return fire
was drawn to this attack, our runner bursts
through their base camp, grabs their flag,
and continues to run off into the shadows
of the night.
Before they could react, the other half
of our Midnight Force opened up on
the defenders from opposite directions,
allowing our first group to break off and
cover our flag runner to our base.
With the defenders in total disarray, some of
us take up sniping those left over, and some
of us break off to return to our own base camp
to begin defensive preparations against the
inevitable morning counter attack.
