Play Marathon on Mariusnet

Fire up any of Bungie's three Marathons under AlephOne and play online at Mariusnet.com.

Now all three Marathon games are free downloads from http://source.bungie.org/ . Click "Download" and get the three original scenarios, get AlephOne, and get hi-res textures (optional). It is classic goodness from classic Bungie. I love classic stuff. It won't be like Xbox. It'll be classic, and updated.

To make Marathon games work in OS X or current Windows OS, download AlephOne from the same link, then do what I did.

To play Marathon, here's what you do (that is to say, here's what I did):

1) I Downloaded Marathon 1, 2, and 3 (Marathon, Durandal, and Infinity) from above link.
a) I then expanded the compressed files into their folders full of game files.

2) I then Downloaded AlephOne and expanded it.

3) Copied all the AlephOne files into each of the three Marathon game folders I had so they each could be played in OS X (or Windows).

I also optionally downloaded the hi-res textures (see link above) and followed their installation instructions.

To play Marathon online
Simply choose either "Gather-" or "Join Network Game" and you'll be hosting or seeing games on mariusnet. You can log in automatically as a guest, or you can go to Mariusnet.com and register a free account. I had an account already from ages ago when b.net died.

Mariusnet.com and its forum is, by the way, the current thriving hub for all things Myth-related as well. Playmyth.net is no more. And that's good.

Here's a link to my favorite map pack for marathon. These are made by FrigidMan (a.k.a. the guy who ran The Mill and created the wild west plugin). These are better than the built-in maps, imho.

Look, I know you guys are pretending to be enthused about how much fun a 15 year old (?) FPS shooter game is JUST so I'll want to play so will be forced to get broadband, but it's not going to work. Really.

I downloaded that map pack, Milt. It doesn't have the one called "Battle of the Clans," the description to which you gave a link above (fought mightily not to end in a preposition on that). I don't see a link to it on that page with the descriptions, either, but the slideshow and 2-D and 3-D map plan views look pretty neat.

I'd love it if more of us did some Marathoning together. None of us has much of an advantage; I played many of those maps we see online in like '94, and I don't remember many of the secrets and stuff -- but what I know I'd be happy to share. I found a secret room with an Alien Weapon in it last night. I asked if my opponent would like me to show him; we then called a truce and I showed him where it was. Then we resumed the carnage.

Speaking of prepositions, how about the kid who ended his sentence with 5 prepositions? Yeah, he was sick in bed and his mom brought him a book to read aloud for his comfort. But, being sick and out-of-sorts, the otherwise polite and grammatically conscious youngster saw a book he disliked and snapped, "What did you bring that book that I didn't want to be read to out of up for?! N00b!"
