Newly Discovered Dwarf Galaxies

I realized I play way too much Myth when I heard the news yesterday that our nearest galaxy neighbors are two newly discovered dwarf galaxies and had visions of myth dorfs muttering at each other.

Wow, very interesting. Entire galaxies of dorfs! I don't know if I could live like that.

The new galaxy in Bootes, which Belokurov called 'Boo,' shows a distorted structure that suggests it is being disrupted by the Milky Way's gravitational tides.

A couple weeks back I stumbled on a ton of information on the Milky Way, most of which I never knew (and I'm into this stuff), including the fact that astronomers now believe we live in a "barred spiral" type galaxy instead of a spiral one (and I learned about the difference).

From there I hit another site with a nice little "powers of 10" journey for both The Distance to the Nearest Star and from there the really big powers of 10 (sometimes powers of 20) journey called the Atlas of the Universe.

I found an unbelievable array of photos from Hubble that I am in the process of organizing and collecting, along with a 3-D simulator of the local stars you can run on the PC and Mac that I'm in the process of learning (the controls on it are quirky to say the least, but it is truly amazing).

I'll post some of these other goodies soon(tm).

Wow, I'd love to see that 3D thing! Also the Hubble images. I love that stuff too, in a total amateur way. If you've already downloaded a ton of those images, would you be into sharing?

My grandfather had a hand in the original Lunar Magnetometer. Not clear exactly what he did for the thing. He was a Nasa engineer.

And I hope those dang dorfs stay in their own dang dorf galaxies!

Speaking of juggling (from another thread), check out the "figure 8" trinary star system pattern on this page - is that funky or what?

I like the last Quadruple Star System entry - what a cool pattern! I thought I read about a six-star-system at one point - will have to see if that was my imagination...

OMG TS, You STILL have my triple star system I loaned you back in college when you wanted to impress that math chick... hey come to think of it, she DID run off with that kid who rode the unicycle and juggled around the quad! Dang, I thought you said you LOST my star system!

Pfeh, what's the world coming to when you can't even trust your friends to return things they borrow...
