Isn't that licensed in the US [and UK?] ? And on TV ?

If so..no anime relase group did it. Most/all only do shows that are unlicensed and drop the licenced ones.

Of, course..ALL animes s00k aside from Initial D.

That has to be illegal, since the DVD is for sale in stores and still a top selling anime.

I meant the quality of Google's port. The real VHD: Bloodlust absolutely rules. There's loads of good anime out there :O

Illegal ? probably...but if you can't buy it in the US [non-licensed ] and the Japanese company isn't translating, then a fansubbed rip is certainly not very un-ethical.

Don't know if that show is licensed and don't care enough to find out. Basically...I was just saying nobody worthwhile ripped it/put it up there. They stick to stuff you can't get unless they do it. [Not even in stores ]

Having a copy doen't neccessarily relate to whether one can currently legally obtain a tape in the US.

a) I have legally purchased tapes of movies which I bought a few years ago, which are no longer available, e.g. they are not currently for sale in the US.

b) I have legally purchased DVDs which I purchased legally online from other countries because the DVD was not at the time available for sale in the US.

That said, intellectually property laws tend to be pretty draconian and sometimes ridiculous (in my opinion they are designed to make maximum profits for corporations, not the artists themselves, and are often bizaare and silly), but if a copyrighted work is being offered for download online by anyone OTHER than the copyright holder or without the copyright holder's permission, it is illegal.

You personally may feel it's not unethical to purchase or download something from someone other than the copyright holder as long as doing so isn't going to take money away from a legitimate purchase of the copyrighted material (e.g. download a pirated copy for free since you can't buy it in a store), but if doesn't matter whether you can buy it in the US or not, downloading pirated copyrighted material IS illegal.

I think Elfoid just missed the point completely, vinylrake.

Of course it's not legal. But if not only can you not get a copy of something in the US, it's not even translated at all.. and a group of fans comes along and translates it to English and puts it up for download. Illegal, yes..but I don't view it as unethical. You're downloading a product that doesn't even exist p; There is nothing to steal

I understand how one can feel something is illegal yet not unethical or morally "wrong", I feel that way about many things myself. I was trying more to address the issues I thought I saw in the statement "My friend has a copy" and the (imo not related) conclusion "therefore it can't be legal to download a copy". e.g. It is illegal regardless whether the product is available in the US.

Question for you sill, you mentioned that since the "product" in this case "doesn't exist" (there is no english language version of the product, nor is it available in US markets) you didn't think it was wrong/unethical. [Correct me if I have summarized incorrectly] Do you feel the same way about bootleg concert CDs/downloads? e.g. It's ok and perfectly ethical to buy/download as long as the artist/record label doesn't have an officially sanctioned version available for purchase? Or do you think an artist/content-creator has rights over to how and when and where and in what form his/her content is released to the public?

I have no opinion on live recordings / bootlegs / demo tapes / etc. because I don't care about them. What's the point of a live recording if you can have the song sounding better on the retail CD ? Especially un-sanctioned recordings...those are generally awful. I don't even listen to live albums released by bands because of the quality... fan recorded concerts are just awful.

Plus, I download all of my music anyway.....so my opinion on music is biased. Whereas, as far as anime goes ..I *ONLY* like Initial D, and have bought all of them that were available. Although, it's not done by the creators ..they're all HK bootlegs [unfortunately.....the ones you can download by fansub groups look much better]. When I referred to something not existing, that was the new [just ended ] Stage Four. There aren't any subbed DVDs to buy whether bootleg or by the creators.
