I think it is a function of age...If I recall from sex ed - you will get breats after starting your apostrophe. After that, breasts will start the inflation progression (morg and imorg, neither shall be spared). The %$^%ing creator gave me breasts, now I am hunting him down throughout the galaxy to sterilize.

Unless it's one of those in-references, I would guess LeGuinn "Left Hand of Darkness". [although the "grey masses" also brings up "Lathe of Heaven" though I don't recall that being about gender specifically]
