Triskelion Readme

Postby Baak » Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:31 pm

Hey All--

Give a glance at the Triskelion Readme I whipped out. Tried to make it short and sweet.

Comments welcome. :)

I'm posting this on the Project Magma forums and possibly PlayMyth forums as well.

Very nice, Baak. Looks purty, is easy to read, and informative.

However, as is anyone's natural tendency, I skipped right to the fine print and discovered a possible discrepancy that may, if it were to fall into the hands of beings dedicated to pure logic, cause cerebral hemorrhaging or possibly only brief light-headedness:

the readme Wrote: No one other than the author is authorized to distribute this plugin in any form

...However, you may... distribute among Myth players you are actively playing with

Listen very carefully -- you man not distribute this in any way. You may distribute it to friends.

lol - yes, it's a quandary.

Basically I want to point out that no one else but the author is authorized to distribute the plugin, but I am giving permission for people to archive and distribute it privately.

I changed the wording slightly - see if it coordinates yet. If not, we can fiddle with it some more. :)

ok not to be tOoH picky (haha get it? I slay me) but after reading the updated EULA I have a question.

When I read it I gather that I can save the map to a CD and send it to a friend, but is it ok to email it to a friend? Or to ftp it to a friend? Or to send it telepathically to a friend using the yet to be developed brain-net for direct nueral data transmission?

Just curious, because after the profit restriction, it appears the permission to distribute the map hinges on the medium the file is being distributed on. Is that what you meant? Or did I maybe misread?

Basically there should be no need to email/ftp/etc. the file since the download would exist either on the OoH site(s) or on another download site to which the author may have posted it (for example: The Tain).

I wouldn't mind if people want to stick it on CD/DVD as part of a private archive and/or to distribute it that way to friends/players they are actively playing with (as long as it's not for profit, etc., as stated in the EULA). Like if you have a private collection of your favorite plugins and want to send it to your buddies - that kind of thing.

Does that make sense?

I may not be wording it properly in the EULA and may need to combine/compress/sort it out better. I'll look at having two entries, one for what you may do with it and one for what you may not do with it.

Yes, and that's the impression I got - but only after perusing it and _thinking_ about the wording...and my knowledge of the Baakian mind probably didn't hurt. ;)

That said, I agree there _should_ be no need to email.ftp.mindmeld.etc, but I am sure there were Myth mapmakers in the past who put restrictions on how their maps could be used not thinking towards the future when they (gasp! the heretics!) stopped playing myth and long after all the contact info in their map readme (email addresses, mill download links) had ceased to function. So, I was just checking to see if you were wanting to limit the map sharing to a time when OoH and you are around and functioning/active or whether you wanted to make those restrictions outlive (perish the thought) you and the OoH site.

If the former, then maybe you want a clause saying something like:

"As long as either the OoH web site (insert site url here) is up and running or Baak's contact info (insert baak email addr here) is functioning, this map may not be placed on any file server/site/download service without the explicit permission of the author. If the OoH site has ceased to exist permanently (e.g. "Permanently" defined as the site being down for a period of not less than 90 consecutive days) and emails to the author are bounced back to the sender unread, then this map may be placed on a myth related download site that abides by the following conditions: etc... fill in the blanks, etc..."

Man should I have been a lawyer. Or what?

I was thinking the same thing earlier today about myself! :)

I like this idea and will see what I can do to combine it. I have something different up there now but think I need to step away from it for a day to let it "gel".

I want to get the EULA solid because then it will be that much easier to whip out the remaining readmes.

Thanks for the feedback all! :D

I think 90 days is excessive. How about 9 days? I mean, don't we want ppl playing these things?
