The Crocodile Hunter has passed away... :(

We were extremely shocked to read this morning that Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, had passed away in a freak accident while diving amongst stingrays off the Queensland coast.

We admired Steve most for showing and teaching how much he cared for animals and nature. He educated people in learning that "scary" animals such as crocodiles, snakes, and spiders should be respected and treated with care. We've never seen anyone handle animals with more care and respect than he did. We hope his family and staff continue with the same infectious spirit Steve conveyed to all - the world needs more like him. Our deepest sympathies to his family and staff. We'll miss you, Steve.

Not being a huge fan or anything I was suprised to find that I actually felt sad when I heard the news this morning, he always seemed to live his life in a fun way - and there was much to admire about him.

There was a point several years ago before he became "famous" that we really enjoyed watching The Crocodile Hunter. Their enthusiasm and love of nature really came through.

Once a certain point of fame was reached, "something" changed, and although the enthusiasm and love was still coming through, there was a bit of a shadow from the fame over everything.

We'll always recall the "early years" with a special kind of fondness - it was just so infectious, entertaining, and rare to see.

I would recommend "The Crocodile Hunter" and "Croc Files" series (not the "Diaries" series as much - you could see the shadow coming in there) to anyone. Extremely fun, entertaining and educational - which is hard to find.

Ouch... How sad. I've noticed while growing up that a lot of people I would have thought would die only from old age well suddenly die to freak accidents.
