The device, which was an astronomical calculator, dates from the 2nd Century BC and was amazingly accurate. In fact, the article says, we know of no more complex device developed for the next 1000 years!

That's actually my favorite TOS Star Trek episode. I have yet to see the uncut version where Kirk's "assistant" says, "Just oiling my traps.".
