Zaentz Rings in Jackson for Prequels

As Lord of the Rings fans mounted a protest following word that New Line had dropped Peter Jackson from consideration as director of The Hobbit and another Lord of the Rings prequel, producer Saul Zaentz has given assurances that Jackson will indeed direct the two films. A German website, Elbenwald.de, posted an interview with Zaentz, who acquired the rights to the works of the late Rings writer, J.R.R. Tolkien, in 1976 (the Saul Zaentz Company owns Tolkien Enterprises), in which Zaentz says, "It will definitely be shot by Peter Jackson. ... Next year The Hobbit rights will fall back to my company. I suppose that Peter will wait because he knows that he will make the best deal with us. And he is fed up with the studios: to get his profit share on the Rings trilogy he had to sue New Line. With us, in contrast, he knows that he will be paid fairly and artistically supported without reservation." Mb someone else could, but are they going to find that guy? The probability is low, and we'd end up with another "Narnia." Jackson's movies were some of the best in any genre recently.

Narnia (imo) was about 5% coolness with 95% rushed crap. Not something I would watch again (personally). As Frum stated, I too believe this would be the way LOTR would have been without PJ, his vision, and the huge team of people that worked with him (espectially WETA).

I for one thought the LOTR trilogy was amazing. Not perfect, but nothing is perfect. Considering what it took to make LOTR (or any other movie of its scope) I don't see how you could possibly say, "so much better".

C'mon Elfoid, you're talking straight out of your hat here...

I thought Narnia had some cool moments, but overall agree it had a rushed and unoriginal look/feel. Nothing like the world PJ and team put together. 12 hours of LoTRs leaves me thinking NO effort could have done better. Maybe different, but not better.

That said...I have always felt there was a different feel to the Hobbit, apart from LoTRs. No where near as gritty or serious, but in some ways more charming. Given that, I *could* see another director delivering a great film, granted they tap into the genuine spirit of the book.

I agree about the mood. Personally I think PJ's love of the epic and the cool would make him fail to 100% capture that mood.

Frum, they took a big gamble letting ANYONE make LOTR and it paid off. Gamble again I say.
