Ancient GOTW snapshot wins contest! Whooo-hoo! :D

Was pleased (and somewhat surprised) that the Game of the Week snapshot from way back on December 7, 2001 won the "Funniest" award in a simple screenshot contest Lugas ran on Project Magma's forums.

Read about it here.

I dug out the film along with the map, A Borderland Odyssey (which we pulled from the BP awhile back due to some odd quirks with unit conversions).

It's painfully obvious that none of us quite had the concept of Steal the Bacon mastered back then - especially me! The outcome of this game was for me to run the ball into a corner (where I could have outran the Thrall if I had just pushed the ball in a better direction!), thus trapping myself. When I ran to try and get in another shot (the rain was RELENTLESS), I ran the wrong way (doh!), failing to contest the ball and thus handed it to those Thrall! The remaining Kaor, TS, and my own armies were too far away and too slow to get there in time - Kaor took it!

Awesome... :D

If anyone wants to watch the film I will post it along with the map somewhere - just let me know.

lol   I remember that game! Kaor had a few classic moments on that map, here is one where he ruins my dorf party. An early lesson (still not learned) about clicking wayyyyyy on the other side of the map and then getting distracted somewhere else

Lol! I looked at that snapshot today and remembered how tense it was during that game - I didn't want to whisper to Kaor lest it distract him too much, but I couldn't be sure he was going to blast you in time! Turned out to be *perfect* timing! :D

I've posted A Borderland Odyssey (the map for both games we're discussing so far) in case anyone needs it, along with the first film with the Pack o' Terminator Thrall and the second film where Kaor sneaks that Wight into Two Saks' merry band of Dwarves!

(Let me know if you have any problems with these downloads)

Patch 1.6 (and previously 1.5.x) can playback 1.3 films just fine, which means you can watch both of these without having to do anything special (other than grabbing some popcorn).

Speaking of which, I'm going to watch the second film now... :r2_158:

lol! Dang... What's funny is I remember parts of these games! This was when we still played 30 minute bacon games too.

Wow, you can really tell we are not exactly advanced players at this point in our Myth careers! Some very funny/odd moves - I like the one where Kaor decides to send an entire squad of Warriors straight after one of your/NKI's Dorfs - and he ignores all the enemies hacking/blasting him on the way! He loses them ALL and never gets the Dorf! Classic!

I think I'm going to have to add this map back into the BP for nostalgia's sake. Bet there are some fun combinations now with all our extra goodies. :)

Look Mr. Grumpypants, this is a fun board full of happy people, so you can just leave your bad vibes and negtivity at the door.

Sorry man. Just felt there was too few submissions for it to have been 'competitive' and the ones I liked most were disqualified due to the 3rd party map ban. I think a larger scale one (making use of Valor and PlayMyth forums at this moment in time) would have much cooler results.

I have to agree that having a much broader contest would be nice.

I outlined several categories in one of my replies to the main contest thread, including ones that were "standard myth", "map plugins", and "map and/or non-map plugins" - as long as they were real games (i.e. not intentionally done for grabbing a screenshot).

We have some hilarious RDF and UGR screen shots that I'd love to include in a future contest. :)

Ah see now to me that's completely different than saying "I thought that contest sucked".

I agree more submissions would have the 'contest' more interesting, but as for the 3rd party rule - I can COMPLETELY understand the rule - it keeps people from making a plugin (say UberSpurtingBloodv1) that a mapmaker could make in order to allow them to create maps and pictures that no one else in the contest is going to have access to. The rule levels the playing field and makes sure no one group (mapmakers) have any advantage over other groups. That was imo why there was a 'no digital editing' rule as well = I am sure the pictures would have been funnier if digital editing were involved, but it wouldn't have given everyone a decent shot.

Rules could be put in place. Like it would have to be a plug over 6 months old, or created by one of several major map-making groups. There's ways it coulda been done within reason - just like playmyth.net has a list of ranked games that count as 'reg' Myth and get max points since they have regulations that follow general practice in reg.
