Hey Guys

Soma here, creator of Grilling Grounds and its Trebuchet.
Gotta register here to be able to contact some of you.

Funny thing is i cant find a copy of it on my old discs and archive of all my myth stuff. Now looking for downloading a copy form the internet, i sadly found out that it isnt available anymore. jeeez :D

I remember a guy called Baak asked for permission to extract the Trebuchet. Unfortuantely i deleted that old messages.

Hope somebody still got a copy or a download link ready for me.

cheers

Soma

Soma!! :D

In case that d/l link vanishes (and for anyone else who wants to grab this excellent map), I've posted Grilling Grounds for download.

The Trebuchets plugin is on the OoH Downloads page, under "Unit Conversion Plugins". :)

You should probably grab Project Magma's latest Patch 1.6 installation file, which just went to public beta.

Soma, we love Grilling Grounds, and the Treb is one of my all-time favorite units. I often call for a Lichen CTF with Trebs substituted in for dorfs and the general. I love it! To do that substituting, go to the link Baak mentioned above and get the unit conversion plugs for it.

Hey Soma,

As you can tell we in OoH LURV Grilling Grounds! Nice work on that map - it's really a lot of fun - and the colormap is ingenious (using the architecture to take advantage of the mesh vertices instead of having to work around them)!

(another ooh favorite map of yours is Hills of the Crow)

If you are ever looking for people to play grilling grounds drop us a line.

glahf

ps. my lips are getting sore, but I have to say thanks for your Mapmaker's food textures - invaluable for those of us who don't like to recreate the wheel.

hey

thanks for compliments. i feel honored. glad you guys seeem to like my maps and the treb, i've spend a good part of my free time to do this stuff :D

i've been playing some mythii again since a few days with good life friend on direct ip connect, since he's been unable to register at playmyth.net. i got mine since 2-3 years but never really played online since. we played some coop at his house and some 1vs1 mp late evenings. the good ol times come up to mind while playing... grilling grounds just perfect for big team games and the treb is pretty fun, too bad it was introduced too late to the community.

may ill be able to join you guys online some time, though because of the time difference, it might won't be frequent. GMT -7h is that right? thats about 7-8h difference since im located in switzerland. anyhow.

question about the trebuchet:
i've watched some records of GG with the treb, an di noticed that it isnt possible to kill it with melee units. i cant really remember if i changed that when i finished the unit, i thought i did but maybe didnt because of some reason. so then, did you change anything to make it possible? or what up with this?

OoH is scattered from East to West coast USA so we are 3 hours apart ourselves. We usually play late evenings so that would be bright and early your time (4AM-8AM). If you are up that early on a Sunday morning I am sure we would be happy to play myth with you.

Baak could (and will) address this better, and I don't know if baak modified that aspect of the trebs but to kill trebs we have been using the surround-and-conquer technique - e.g. surround it with at least 3 units (the more the better) so it can't move away or get the treb trapped against something so it can't move. A handful of warriors or zerks can take out a treb fairly quickly though it will still get a shot or two off before it dies.

Definitely! And remember you can join in anytime during that time (you've got the pwd now).

Yep, Vinylrake covered it perfectly: I did modify them slightly to allow for the melee attack - I ended up running several tests to determine if it was possible and then modified the "pathfinding radius" to the point we liked it best - that is, you have to "surround/block" a treb (usually with 2+ melee units) before you can attack it, although one melee unit can as well. We fine-tuned it to the point of it being well-balanced after 100 or so games.

Additional modifications:

  • "Arrow Volley" is now the Special attack (i.e. T-attack)
  • "Fire Arrow" is now the double-click attack
  • Arrow attacks can be much closer (i.e. shorter range) than before
  • ALL attacks (regular mortar round, arrow volley, fire arrow) use mana
  • Made the Trebuchet Arrows (for both the Volley and Fire Arrow attack) bigger and distinct from Archer Fire Arrows (they can't use each others arrows)
  • Trebuchets can "pick up" the Treb Arrows, start with 6 and can carry 9
  • Added a new "Arrow Volley / Fire Arrow" ammo icon
  • Made the "stone ammo in the back of the Trebuchet" (that is unused but cool looking) always dark grey (it was sometimes white)
  • Repaired the Primary/Secondary color display on the shield emblems on the unit to correctly display colors (they were always displaying bright green as half the color)
  • Limited their healing % to 75%
  • Added some other Patch 1.5.1+ features that I can't recall right now :)
I've debated adding a "can run over melee units if right next to them" (i.e. attack very close range with mild attack), but I think this would ruin the near-perfect unit balance we've obtained through the 200+ games we've played using them.

What I did with the Trebuchets plugin is make a series of plugins so you can substitute selected "unit types" with the Trebuchets (I did the same thing with Leggo Airships):

    ~~ Trebuchets (archers) ==> Bowmen (Heroes in big+can), bre'Unor, fir'Bolg
~~ Trebuchets (barons) ==> Baron units - great for assassin games!
~~ Trebuchets (big+can) ==> "Big" units - Trow, Myrk Giants, plus Cannons
~~ Trebuchets (dorfs) ==> Just about every Dorf unit there is
~~ Trebuchets (fetch) ==> You guessed it... Fetch
~~ Trebuchets (warlocks) ==> All but Warlock Heroes (they're in big+can)
~~ Trebuchets (wights) ==> Convert those Wights to something tougher...

Thus you can play the "new" Trebuchets on "Grilling Grounds (Siege)" by using the ~~ Trebuchets (big+can) plugin - this will substitute the new ones for the original ones. If you want more Trebs, you just add another of the plugins above (like ~~ Trebuchets (dorfs)). It all depends on what units are on the original map. This makes things extremely flexible!

Note: The "~~" at the front of the plugin name ensures it loads last with the alpha-sorting of plugins and the way things work in Patch 1.5.1+. This lets us mix and match them with Rocket Dorf Fest, Airships, etc.

Makes for one FUN game! :D

See... now you've GOT to join some games with us! We'll have to see if we can help get your friend back on PlayMyth too!
