Les Paul passed away today (at 94!) -- no idea he invented multi-track recording, overdubbing, and 8-track tapes besides his iconic electric guitar!
Also his first electric guitar was made in 1941. Dang.

my favorite LP anecdote is about how once he started doing the multitrack recording and doubling parts on their records - especially of his wife;s vocals (she and he played and recorded together) he wanted to be able to reproduce that effect live. the technology wasn;t available to double voices in real time so they had his wife Mary's sister tour with them and stand off stage out of sight where she would sing the harmonny/doubled part of Mary's vocals into a mic that was mixed with Mary's vocals. Allegedly baffled everyone - music / audio experts couldn't figure out how he was getting that effect live.
