Saturday night I had the unique experience of seeing myself on “the big screen”. My son and some friends entered a movie in the “Campus Movie Fest” competition (teams of students are given a camera, tripod and mac laptop for one week and they have to complete a 5 minute film in that week) and I had a small role in their film. [Yes, I have a son in college. I told you I was old]
Anyways, the best 16 films from the handful of colleges who participated (which resulted in hundreds of films) were screened Sat night at a huge old opulent theatre right in the heart of Boston’s Theatre district (The Colonial Theater). Since his film beat out the other couple of dozen from his university to win the “Best Movie” award, it was one of the ones shown. Very fun. Of course my son had the starring role, and theoretically I was there to support him, which I was. But still, I was looking forward to seeing myself onscreen too.
An even odder experience was getting recognized while in line to enter the theatre. As I was waiting in line, one of the organizers was walking the line asking if everyone had their tickets already. When I said I didn’t, he walked me inside to the ticket office and as we walked he said “We all LOVED that movie you are in”. w00t. I am a micro celebrity. heh.
update: In looking for a pic of the Colonial Theatre I discovered it has been in operation since 1900 - it's first show was the "stage spectacular", Ben-Hur.
